Last Friday I took a small squad a fire fighters over to the West Zone of the forest. That is the Ely, Aurora, Cook area. We were helping them staff for fires. We spent one day at the Ely district and then went over to Sand Lake Guard Station, which is on Hwy 53 between Virginia and Cook and then spent Sunday at Aurora. They were in extreme fire danger and needed some extra help. Fortuneately (or unfortunately) there were no fires on the forest. Lots just outside our protection area but none for us. We returned to Grand Marais on Monday morning.
So far this season we've just been getting things ready for the fire season. I spent a couple days putting together my new fire engine (E-22). We got a different truck this year because our old one wasn't rated for the weight of the water. Anyway I got that all up and running now it's just a matter of waiting for the first fire of the season.
As for the coming days, I'm meeting dad over at the Cabin on Thursday night to do some spring cleaning and opening things up. Then around May 17 heading to the cities for Theresa's best friends wedding....
