Well it has been extremely busy around here. As you probably heard two of our fires made a major run which led to the evacuation of almost 200 homes on the Gunflint Trail. One of the fires ran about four miles in just a couple hours. Fire behavior like that is amazing this time of year. That is a sign of how dry it really is here. The two fires equal about 6000 acres. We have only one fire over 1000 acres in September ever recorded before this. We have since got some rain and cool temps that will probably take us to the end of the fire season but we are still way down on moisture so next spring and summer could be busy if we don't get significant snowfall this winter.
Even with fire dieing down things are still busy. Last wednesday-thursday I was involved in blasting in the Ely area. Since I am one of the only people with a haz-mat drivers liscense I had to pick up and drop off the explosives every day so I had three 16 hour days in a row. But I did get Saturday and Sunday off. Now, I'm sitting in a hotel in Ely for my tri-annual blasting recertification all this week. I'm looking forward to some more time off. Theresa and I (plus her family) will be going to Monterey California next week for a wedding. It will be nice to get away for awhile.
Well I gotta go meet the rest of the class for dinner so.....Later
